The Ecoartist.org e-News letter  -  Issue #1  -  June, 2007

Fore-Runners of the Ecoart Movement

In our first issue we would like to show some of the people and ideas that layed the foundation for Ecoartist.org. A few of them are still working today but regretfully some were also great ideas that just didn't take off. An example being the "Creative Artists Resource Project". We think it could work today, and we hope that someday Ecoartist.org could give it a try either online ala freecycle.org or in a reality based space like they did. Anyway... the issue is about fore-runners! They can't all be winners but sometimes the long-term idea is more important than the initial outcome. Enjoy.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Beth Racette

Artist Beth Racette became true pioneer in ecoart when she used woven yarn, string, drawings, lenses, buffalo bones, animal entrails, hearts of racoon and other animals, rocks, hypodermics, and other assorted objects to create "Installation with 13 Names" or "Pursuit of Joy in the Midst of Pragmatism and Escapism" in 1998 at ARC Gallery @ RAWSPACE, Chicago. The installation open a dialog on addiction and consumption.

Later in 1991 She used springs, glass, latex, pacifiers, a sink, chain, and ball bearings to create her installation piece "Desire".

"Desire" was created for a gay/lesbian and sexuality studies conference at Rutgers University in 1991. Beth explains the work... "My strategy in working with found and existing objects is to recycle the debris of society and assist people (and myself) to understand human development; past, present and future."

SPOTLIGHT LINKS

Trashlog.org

Artist Nico Van Hoorn has created Trashlog.org by collecting a piece of trash each day, scanning and posting it on the internet. The site highlights the beauty and inherent design of disgarded objects. Art or trash? You decide!

Trash Art by Cheryl Hissong

"Trash Art" is an amazing, inspiring artical by Cheryl Hissong that was published Though "Pagewise/essortment.com" in 2002. It's about finding new, artistic and inventive ways for recycling those things you normally throw away. The artical touches upon many of the topics we cover here at ecoartist.org. We consider Cheryl's thinking to be ahead of it's time!

Garbage In, Art Out by Deborah Scoblionkov

"Garbage In, Art Out" is a 1998 artical by Deborah Scoblionkov, published at citypaper.net, that showcased the "Please Take Museum" which was a joint venture between the "Creative Artists' Resource Project (CARP)" of Philadelphia, a non-profit arts and environmental organization, and the "Dumpster Divers", a loose network of local artists. In the spirit of Marcel Duchamp, the museum was to have artists work with recycled materials (i.e. materials donated to the museum and arranged as the exibits) to elevate the mundane to marvelous. Sadly we can't find any evidence of this facility still existing, but it was an awesome idea we would like to see come about again!

Freecycle.org was the website that helped sparked the idea for Ecoartist.org. They are doing amazing work to reduce waste by what they call "Gifting". This site is exploding into a worldwide movement. I want to be the first to offer the idea that the founders be nominated for the Peace prize! We all owe you so much freecycle.org. We encorage any artist who is, or would like to work in reclaimed materials to sign up asap!

SEND US YOUR IDEAS FOR THE NEXT ISSUE!

Help us keep Ecoartist.org interesting

As you may have noticed by now, Ecoartist.org is all about changing the way that artist and patrons think of their consumption of materials inrelation to art. We have started with our own ideas, but we want you to help too. If every issue is only about what we find interesting, then it's going get stale fast! We love to network with other artists! So, if you have any news, ideas, promotions or links to your eco-art, please send it to us. (Please try to keep all time sensitive prpmotions info like gallery/public showings at least one month in advance.) And we'll include you in the next issue.

Thanks for helping us get the word out!
